Bad Fact: US Ranks "3rd Or 4th" in Weather Forecasting

Though the computer and computer modeling were invented in the US, the Europeans knew the exact path of Hurricane Sandy days before American forecasters. Stunning!  Stunning that computer modeling has such immense power to see the future and stunning that the Europeans and others are ahead of us in this vital area.

In fact, the US ranks "3rd or 4th" in storm forecasting, according to MIT Professor Emanuel.
http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2012/10/28/why-america-has-fallen-behind-the-world-in-storm-forecasting/. "The overall star performer is a computer model operated by a consortium of European nations; that model accurately predicted Sandy's track and evolution well before U.S. models caught up later last week."

Why did the Europeans know more first about "our" Hurricane? They use much faster computers for weather forecasting and pay to do so.  Sometimes cheap is not good.
